I am fascinated by the paradox of urban life - people living crowded together but at the same time in isolation and anonymity. As they hurry to cross streets or sit in cafes and libraries, people interact but for the most part do not connect. My paintings are like snapshots of these everyday moments, but with heightened attention to atmosphere, surface, and pattern - I am fascinated by the strong shadows and graphic shapes I find on city streets. Setting these passing but constantly recurring scenes into thick oil paint I draw attention to them and add my own paradox - the long and careful labor needed to depict something that disappears as soon as it is seen.
I paint to understand why I am drawn to this busy, interconnected, but emotionally disconnected world - to explore my need for both relationship and anonymity.
